The College


History
Life goes on like an ever flowing stream,meeting on its way that which occurs.Yet as time advances,we have to adapt ourselves to suit the surroundings.

Established in 24th November occupying three rooms in Writers Building to meet the requirement of trained Engg. personel for Public Works Department as Civil Engineering College,was affiliated to the Calcutta University in May 1957.

From 1965 to 1979 the College functioned as Civil Engineering Department of Presidency College. In 1980 the college shifted to it's new and permanent home the lush campus at Bishop's College, Howrah.It got its name ,Bengal Engineering College in 1921.

1921 A.D. On recommendation of Mookerjee Committee various Departments of the college were reoganised
1932 A.D. The First Batch of students appeared at the Degree Examinations in Mechanical Engineering
1935 A.D. The Degree Course in Electrical Engineering was introduced in this year.
1939 A.D. The Degree Course in Metallurgical Engineering was introduced in this year.
1949 A.D. Five year Degree Course in Architecture & part-time P.G. Diploma in Town & Regional Planning were introduced.
1976 A.D. The college started its first Computer Center.
1984 A.D. The new degree course in Computer Science & Technology with sophisticated software & hardware laboratories.Now it offers an Post Graduate Courses as well as Diploma as Master of Computer Applications .

The college now has 11 full fledged departments offering Undergraduate & Post graduate courses and catering to the research works of various Govt. organisations and individuals. A modernised Central Computer Center,Numerical Analysis lab. & DTP lab.with extensive computer network has been set up in the Dept. of Mathematics. B.E.College has undergone a sea change,and once the semester system was introduced things changed as never before. A 24 hr resturant has become operational.The Alumni House is all set to treble itself with amenities of a modern air conditioned guest house. A 24 hr ISD/STD/PCO booth along with a mini Telephone Exchange is on the cards,whereby each hostel/Hall is to be equipped with telephones .

A Multigymnasium with all modern facilities ,with honorary professors ensure the student participation in sports.

Hostels have been given a brand new look,with concealed wiring and fans. A new auditorium is on the cards too.

Programmes & Intake


The college has changed in its outlook too. With the introduction of semester system,the course structure for both U.G & P.G. have undergone great changes. The new syllabus covers latest development in the field of Engineering & Technology .


UnderGraduate Courses
Intake in the various streams has been increased , Computer education has been made part of the curriculum from 1st year. Now the trend is to accomodate latest topics after creating a strong base in conventional areas.
A small example would highlight the difference.
The first Semester batch is yet to set foot on the corporate world but the numbers among the first hundred rank holders ,to be admitted to this college has risen from ZERO in 1993 to TEN in 1996.

PostGraduate Courses
Three semester M.E. courses in seven discipline, a Four semester course in Regional & Town Planning and an M.C.A diploma caters to the needs of higher education.

The Institution has been approved as a Quality Improvement Programme (Q.I.P.) centre for M.E. Courses in Mechanical & Electrical Branch.

The academic Departments offer guidance and facilities for Ph.D Programmes .For this purpose the college offers 10 Doctoral Fellowships.

Research Programmes sponsored by different central and state agencies namely ISRO, DRDO , CSIR , UGC , MHRD , BARC etc. are being held with great success.
Research Programmes with foreign collaborations are also on the cards.

The academic departments provide valuable consultancy services to Engineering departments sponsored by Central & State agencies.

Administrative Setup


After attaining autonomy the administritive setup has undergone some changes. The principal has been replaced by the Director and a post of Dean of Engineering & Architecture established.

The Director, Dr. S.M.Chatterjee has recently taken over from Dr. B.Sen ,the first Director of the Deemed University.


The Registrar Mr N.Upadhyay

A Controller of Examinations has been appointed for streamlining the examination procedure.

Facilities


The colllege now boasts of modern facilities , in the field of education, sports and daily life.

The Computer Center is equipped with latest technology. The students have access to it from 8 am to 8 pm.

Modern equipments are being procurred for research and sessional projects. In fact now B.E.College is one of the Institutions to have the most modern facilities.


The Main Library

The main Library is fully computerised and has a vast collection of books that suffice the needs of the students & scholars.Efforts are being made to make it better still.


Journal Section, Main Library

Each Department has its own Sub-Library.

The College has a moderate Printing Press equipped with a Desk-Top publication system . The College bulletins,Prospectus,seminar materials & College Research Journals are printed here.


The Workshop

The Workshop Complex has the following nine Engineering Shops to offer training in different basic shop practice:

                      i) Carpentry Shop
                     ii) Smithy-Welding & Painting Shop
                    iii) Fitting Shop
                     iv) Machine Shop
                      v) Foundary & Pattern Shop
                     vi) Boiler House
                    vii) Electric Shop
                   viii) Automobile Shop
                     ix) Project Model Shop
 
Other facilities include a branch of United Bank of India inside the campus.A Hospital is there to see to the health of the residents of the campus.

Campus & Cultural Activities



The Oval

B.E.College has never been short of cultural activities.There are various cultural events organised throughout the year.

The other major cultural events organised in this session ( from July '96) are:

ZONASA by Department of Architechture,Town and Regional Planning.

RICHTER by Richardson Hall.

LUPINISCENCE by Wolfenden Hall.

B.E.C.S.U. Welcome, C.P.Presents & S.F.I Presents.

Apart from Cultural extravaganzas , the major Academic & Technical activities organised are:

Technical Seminars on the fora of departmental REUNIONS .

Seminars on fields of general interest organised by the Department of Humanities .

Student-Industry across the table interaction.

The Inter College Sports Meet which has participation from all major Institutions in The Eastern Region.

One unit of Senior National Cadet Corps have been raised in the college.
Vivekananda Youth Circle ,B.E.College Unit is active in the college. and celebrated its 11th year of foundation this year.It enjoys participation from students & teachers alike. VYC has started noble scolarships to help the economically backward students. For this they are trying to establish a fund ,for which they request for benevolent donations.
